I selected this novel based on the summary on the back while browsing at the bookstore.

The summary grabbed my attention because it discussed the Allegheny Mountains, which are about 4 hours from my home. It discusses strained relationships, pushing boundaries and determination, so I figured I would give it a read.

I saw many reviews that this book was hard to put down and very moving. Most reviews spoke well of the book, author, and writing style.

My take of the book is that the plot was not intriguing or extensive. The characters were not deeply developed in my opinion and seemed to focus in on Leah, Elliott and Jean. The other characters had little mention besides the problems they had, no depth to their importance in the book. There was not a lot of context in relationships and the story alluded to darker or threatening tones, but never really got there in the book. The beginning of the book captured my attention, and I finished the book waiting for a big A-HA moment or something that was going to bring the story to life.

There seems to be a deeper meaning, maybe metaphors or analogies, but it didn’t resonate with me.
